Jacob Holdt

I just so happened to randomly stroll across a postcard of this photograph in the Photographers Gallery in Soho. It really caught my attention due to the shear unexpected content. Stereotypically old women don't hold guns, its not something we relate this object of violence to. Which is the reason why this photograph holds a rather powerful tone and narrative.

The way she is holding the gun shows that she is in control and is presenting it with a warning. The fact that shes not pointing it or holding it in an aggressive manner, makes me feel like she owns it purely for self defense, and by looking at the rather rugged setting she stands in it becomes apparent that the gun is or could be rather useful for her safety. It appears that she is standing outside her home, like she is protecting her only source of security and stability.
